8″ Monitor Speaker Reviews

The HS80M monitor gives you built in power, room adjustment gain controls and good sound. While monitors are probably the most subjective thing you buy for your home or project studio. You usually don’t have the option of actually bringing home 2 or 3 pairs of monitors and picking the one that performs best in your space so reputation plays a large role in the decision. These are excellent entry level monitors that will not disappoint you if you really understand what monitors are supposed to do.

I have mine mounted on a set of Auralex MoPad absorbers on top of 36″ monitor stands and the absorbers make a big difference. Remember that the room you are listening in plays as big, if not bigger role in what you hear than the monitors you are using. Look into getting some basic acoustic treatments to tame the pumped up bass and harsh treble reflections you can get in most house sized rooms. Put yourself in an equilateral triangle with your head at one apex and the speakers at the other two, with tweeters at ear level facing in at you for the proper stereo image. When you get it right the sound seems to hang in midair about 4-5 feet in front of you and you can’t seem to hear anything coming from either speaker unless the music is panned hard left or right.

These monitors have MORE than enough power to set your ears ringing if your not careful so don’t treat them like your computer’s multimedia speakers and dial up the volume. Start low and remember 83db is the “standard” intensity for monitoring.

So if your in the market for excellent quality, entry level monitors then these would be a fine choice. Also look in into KRK Rockits, Wharfedale Diamond 8.2 and Adam A5 monitors for others of quality you may like.

This review is gonna be kinda useless for studio users, but….

I had never really loved the speakers I had in my home setup, and had been looking around for something I liked the sound of better, without much luck, and I was looking at some very expensive speakers…

Then I was at Guitar Center to get a guitar string for my girlfriend’s son, and ended up chatting with the salesman in the pro gear department and mentioned what I was looking for and he suggested listening to the studio monitors…. So I did and was favorably impressed by a few, a 0 KRK VXT 8, a 0 Mackie HR824mk2 and these Yamahas which were 0.

I went back to the store a few days later with a stack of CD’s and listened to them all for a few hours and after all of that, unbelievably the (much less expensive) Yamahas sounded the best with 99% of what we played through them. My girlfriend and the salesman heard the same thing… There was no price tag and she said “ok, how much”, thinking they’d be outrageous and was very happy when I said “a little more than half of what the others are”. Honestly, the Yamahas blew away every other monitor in there including the 00/each JBL’s (which IMO actually sucked, especially for the price). So I bought a pair and the matching HS10 8″ subwoofer, which is extremely well matched to the HS80′s. I hooked them up to an old Carver CT-7 preamp and they rock as stereo speakers, no need to even touch the tone controls, they were perfect out of the box.

Now I picked up an Onkyo Pro surround pre-amp and am in the process of adding more of these as center and surround speakers.

I find it unbelievable that the price of these includes the amps. In a home setup they sound great and are capable (with the sub) of shaking the house with movies or loud music. I highly recommend them, and I’ll point out that since A) they’re almost ridiculously cheap, and B) the amps are built in so you don’t have to buy separate amps, you can spend more on a nice high-end pre-amp/surround processor instead of getting a lower quality receiver.

Negatives: Possible WAF issue – I think they look cool, but they have no grills and 2 fat cables cable running to each one, so they look a little industrial in the living room. Also, unlike some of the more expensive monitors, they don’t have any built in way to power them on and off with your equipment so you’ll have to buy or build triggered outlets ( to build, -0 to buy) or switch them manually. A home user will need to get cables to adapt the balanced inputs to RCA jacks unless you have a high end preamp (no big deal, ). You might also need stands depending on your room setup. Still, even with a few minor add’l expenses, the sound is worth every penny.

I’ve had these speakers for a week or so. They are a fairly large sized speaker, so make sure to measure if placing in “tight” places. When doing my research for this purchase, I of course visted Amazon as I always do, but I also went to a local Best Buy, where they had a variety of outdoor speakers to choose from. I must be honest when I say I’m a Klipsch man at heart, and if I was willing to spend and extra 0.00 on a pair of outdoor speakers, I would have bought the Klipsch speakers. In my honest opinion the sound quality of the Klipsch speakers had a fuller more natural sound compared to the Yamahas; I find the Yamahas to be a little on the “tingy” side. I’ve owned various speakers in the past including polk (which I hated) Klipsch, Yamaha, etc. Nothing beats Klipsch speakers, but for the money these speakers are definitely a great buy. One more thing about these speakers; actually the mounting brackets that come with the speakers. The mounting brackets attach to the speaker in a way that makes you have to mount the speaker vertically instead of horizontally in order to direct the speaker to get the best sound imaging. I really wanted to mount horizontally, because I thought they looked better up in the corners of my porch area, but in order to direct the speakers down towards the listening area I had to mount vertically. It would have been nice to be able to position the speaker either way, but unfortunately this is not the case. Anyways, good speaker for the price, but still doesn’t sound as nice as a good pair of Klipsch. As always you get what you pay for.

I compared these to the NS-AW350BL side-by-side and I found that the 390′s definitely sound like a smaller speaker. The bass in the 390′s did not live up to my expectations after having the 350′s. The high frequencies sound great on both of these sets of speakers, and I recommend both of them to anyone who wants a great value for a set of fantastic sounding indoor/outdoor speakers.

I purchased these from Wholesale AV, which I would highly recommend. I really only had other reviews to go by. Since the other older models received such high reviews, decided to go with the newer. They get the thumbs up from me. They have reasonable lows and nice crisp highs. Remember that if you’re mounting these outside, you won’t get the bass you’re used to inside your home where there are better acoustics. I love being in my backyard way more than ever, either working or just relaxing. You’ll look for excuses to just be outside!

I play internet radio through my computer & have a headphone to stero rca adapter going to my amplifier & from the amp I ran telephone line through the attic to the other side of the house, & just outside my patio I installed a stereo volume control purchased from Radio Shack for .00, & from in-wall volume control to the speakers mounted about 15′ apart..just under the eave. You will need 4 screws to mount the bracket. I have hardy plank siding & used 2.5″ wood screws. If you don’t have speakers in your backyard, don’t wait any longer. It’s a great investment and you and your friends will love them.

I’m buying a 3rd set of these for home. I bought two sets for a rental beach house in the Outer Banks and they have performed admirably. I was afraid they’d be blown after the first rental season, but on my last trip down there they sound as good as when first installed. I have a set exposed on the top deck and they’re getting hit with rain and ocean mist and they still look good and sound good. I took one point off because they are not the best outdoor speakers I have heard, but for the price they are an excellent value.

We are simply thrilled with these speakers! They arrived quickly, in perfect condition and were very easy to install. The sound is fantastic, and a great value for the price. We installed them in our screened porch and love the way they tilt if you want to direct the sound in a certain direction. They also have safety clips so that if they were to fall off (which they don’t seem like they will because they are firmly mounted), they wouldn’t crash down on someone’s head. I was very pleased that they came in white because they blend in nicely, having both a great appearance and great sound.
