I purchased 4 speaker sets in the price range of -. My intent is to find the best set for teachers to use in their classroom at this price range. Out of the 4 sets this was the only one I returned. The sound was okay, but the all the others were noticeably better.

Logitech S220 2.1 Speaker System (Black) – good sound, but if the max volume was any softer then it would not work well in a classroom.

Logitech X-140 2.0 Speakers – Loudest Volume level; Easiest hookup with only 2 speakers; base levels are okay without a subwoofer, but subwoofer would improve music; Best of the group for listening to someone talking.

Boston Acoustics Horizon MM220 Multimedia Speaker System (Midnight) – I would describe this set as being in the middle of the road compared to the 2 described above. Sound volume, music quality and talking quality are clearly in the middle.

My Recommendation – Depending on what you want to mostly use them for…

Talking and Volume – Logitech X-140

The Boston Acoustics Horizon MM220 has gone up in price on Amazon () and is on [...]. I would not pay that much. If I was going to spend that much I would purchase the Bose Companion 2 Series II at SamsClub for plus tax. You can simultaneously hook up a computer and DVD/VCR and the sound is great.

Despite a few bad reviews, I decided to try these speakers out. These speakers are really cool looking and make a great first impression. I have to say, I was expecting them to sound like my music was playing out of a tin can, but they really proved me wrong. They actually do have a nice full sound. I also like that the on/off switch and main volume is easily accessible and I don’t have to reach very far at all to adjust it. Another nice touch is the fact that there is a knob on the sub woofer to adjust the base. Most sets with a small sub woofer like this one don’t have that. As for the sound of the sub woofer, I think that it is great, however this is the first pair of speakers that I have had with a sub woofer. I would say that these are an overall good pair of speakers, and I have already recommended them to a friend.

I’m at a loss reading some of the mediocre reviews. I picked up a pair of the Logitech LS11′s mainly to have a pair of typical “cheap computer speaker” monitors in the recording studio for checking mix playback. The sub-bass performance on these little gems is surprising, the overall mix balance is flattering, and I can crank them up about to about ~83 dBSPL (about 1/3) before hearing distortion kick in. Maybe it’s because I’m driving these speakers from pro rack gear, but I’d buy these again in a second.

Don’t expect to hear nice quality sound, or listen to music through these, because they don’t sound great. I purchased this tonight and cannot believe the sound clarity that this lil’ thing has. I am very pleased with the sound however cannot give this a 5-star rating because the cord has a strange setup. Instead of being hidden the cord must wrap around the side to plug into the ipod. I have a 3rd gen nano (lil’ square one) and the jack is on the bottom making it sit off-center. Also props the ipod a little off the back plate. If this didn’t sound as good as it does I would take it back. For this price its definitely a keeper!

Wow…this thing is great. Yes, it runs on batteries. And no, it doesn’t charge your ipod. But it costs and it’s portable! All you need is 4 AA batteries and you can take your music anywhere! It’s great if you are having a BBQ, hanging out on the boat, or just want to move it from room to room to enjoy your ipod! I loved it so much, I ordered a second one just to have for when I do stuff outside. It’s little, it’s loud, it’s a great setup. Totally worth the money!

This item is very light and sounds fairly decent as long as the volume isn’t all the way up. When it is up too high it gets a bit distorted as you might guess with a unit so inexpensive. But really not bad at all for the money and projects the sound a good distance away even when not at full volume. Not a lot of bass response but what do you expect for this price. One thing that is a little annoying is that you really can’t get to the controls of the Ipod when it is fit into the little half net where it’s supposed to sit inside the unit. If you plan on changing the songs constantly, then this might annoy you. But set it to play with a playlist and it’s all cool. Overall a great little product for the small price. I found it at Best Buy for only .99 though.

I bought these at Kohl’s for . I figured they were cheap enough so if they sucked I wouldn’t be out much.

For the money they sound pretty good. As the other review noted, they don’t have a lot of bass but for a speaker that only measure 1″ across they do well enough. I am listening to them at this very moment at my desk at work. I can play them low enough it doesn’t disturb my co-worker but still enjoy my music!
