I am a consumer electronics professional and have been in the business for 20 years now. I say this just to add some context for this review and to let readers know that I’m far pickier than most users.

Given how much of a movie comes from the center channel, it is arguably the most important speaker in any home theater system. Before this I had a high-end Infinity with dual 5.25″ mid/woofs, but found it to lack depth. The clarity and openness were great, but I wanted to feel the menacing timbre in Darth Vader’s voice and get the full impact of a baritone singing voice, which I felt was missing.

They say that your center should be the same type of speaker as your fronts, but putting a tower on your TV is a bit excessive, even for me. So I did the next-best thing.

The CSi5 is an imposing speaker with dual 6.5″ woofers, a sizable ported cabinet, and a clean but not shrill tweeter. The subdued highs of the tweeter were actually what made it such a good match for my Phase Tech front speakers.

Well, while I definitely got the depth I was after, and the highs are wonderfully mellow, the problem is that the speaker lacks the openness of the Infinity. I thought the thick and dense cabinet would solve this problem, which I’ve heard in other Polk speakers of lower quality, but it didn’t. The sound is very localized and often sounds like it’s coming from a box, which, of course, it is.

I’ve always liked, if not always respected, Polk speakers, and actually had a pair of the old Monitor 10B speakers. They were boomy and a little too sparkly, but they had a pleasing sound and were more open than today’s models. They started messing with the two-way design they used in all of their speakers–all the way up to their monstrous SDA SRS1.2s–and wound up kicking themselves in the butt.

It’s a good speaker, but to a guy that values open sound above so many other aspects of sound quality, this is a tough pill.

My only reservation is the weight and sheer size. Its on the heavey side and a bit bulky so plan your placment carefully

Polk Audio RTI A3 Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Cherry) Reviews

Over the past few months I’ve been replacing my speakers, going from a piecemeal 5.1 setup with a Boston Acoustic center, Bose surrounds, and old Altec 3-way fronts to an all new setup using the RTi-A series from Polk: Polk Audio RTI A7s for my fronts, a Polk Audio CSI A6 Center Channel, and these RTi-A3s for rears. I also bought a Polk Audio PSW505 subwoofer to round the system out, which I previously reviewed. I’ve had these RTi A3s for 2-3 weeks now, so I’ve had a chance to break them in a bit – and I’m very impressed with the sound and performance. I tested these out as the main speakers on my receiver when I first got them and I was surprised at how full the sound was for such a small unit. These are rated at 50Hz -3dB limit, so there is very little bass lost except at the ultra low-end, all things considered. Needless to say these are pure Polk, and as such the mid- and high-range response is excellent. When pushed they can get a bit shrill, but that’s only when I really peg it (I’m running these through a Yamaha RX-V1800). I should note that both music and entertainment sound great; these are not one-dimensional units at all.

The fit and finish are excellent, with a stylish curved cabinet design finished in black oak and a pewter-accented grille. The product is sturdy and well-built although not too heavy (16 lb. each).

Overall this is a great speaker at a great price. Fantastic serving as rears, but these little guys are more than adequate as fronts if you don’t have space for the bigger models – the A5s, A7s and A9s are all over 40″ tall, while these stand just 14.5″ – just make sure you get a sub. I’m very pleased with the sound quality for the money, as these speakers sound better than anything else in this price range. Heartily recommended.

This one certainly saves space(if space is your main concern). My car(Dodge Stealth) has little trunk to spare anything so this box comes handy. It has some sort of deep bass but does not have a punch to it. If you are looking just a bass to add to your stereo, this will definitely do the job.I hook it up to my 1000 Watts Amp and 50×4 Power Acoustic DVD/Stereo and it sounds great. I like it. Note: all Sub-woofer with a type of Tweeters on it won’t create a punch…If looking a punchy bass, don’t get this one.

I bought this box to replace my 2-15″ box so I could get more leg room. The specs said it would go down to 30Hz. No way. It has more bass than I thought, but it doesn’t push it. Don’t expect hard, slamming bass from this box. The only thing I was impresssed with was its ability to take alot of power. I put 75 watts of hard bass to it and it took it, but didnt really shake the floor and windows like my 15′s did, and yes, I expected that. The biggest problem was that the speakers aren’t tuned to the box, like most of these boxes. If you take these speakers out & put them in a box 3 times bigger, you’d have a great sounding speaker. The manufacturer obviously did not tune this box. They just threw the speakers into it, added some tweeters, ports, and wired it. I guess you get what you pay for. I really want a slim box for a regular cab pickup with some bass, but I guess I’m outa luck.
